Peanut Butter Lovers' Bars

Kashi is well-known for whole grain products, including granola bars and these are worthy of the name and your attention. These Peanut Peanut Butter Chewy Granola Bars are doubly good, indeed. They are satisfying peanut perfection and not too sweet. You won't feel like you are eating a tooth-aching dessert.

Crunchy, lively and portable--a perfect snack to take with you and enjoy on the go with coffee, tea, milk, soy milk, whatever beverage makes your day.

Wake-Up Cereal

Kashi is a brand that offers a dependable selection of foods across a wide spectrum. Their motto is “Seven Whole Grains on a Mission,” and those 7 grains are:
Barley, Oats, Hard Red Winter Wheat, Rye, Long Grain Brown Rice, Buckwheat, and Triticale, a cross between Wheat and Rye.

Cereal is a popular breakfast food and Kashi offers 16:
Go Lean, Go Lean Crunch, Good Friends, Go Lean Hot Cereal, Heart to Heart, Heart to Heart Oatmeal, Kashi Flakes, Kashi Granola, Honey Puffs, Honey Sunshine, Kashi Nuggets, Kashi Puffs, Kashi U, Vive Probiotic Digestive Wellness Cereal, Mighty Bites Cereal, Organic Promise Cereal.

Honey Sunshine, a new offering, is very tasty indeed. This is a nice crunchy wake-up call….as the box says, a “Honey-kissed Seven Grain Cereal Pillows.” One taster thought this cereal had the fun taste of a cross between Corn Pops and Honey Grahams and recommended it not only as a breakfast food but also as a snack, with or without milk.

Another respondent enthusiastically touted Honey Sunshine as her “ absolute favorite.”

While still another chooses Kashi cereals for their “good flavor, texture, fiber source, ‘good for me’ ingredients.”

One family on the West Coast reports: “We like Kashi because of their ingredients and reasonable prices. We usually buy their cereal and cracker products. They tend to be superior to their mainstream competitors, who continue to rely on trace amounts of trans-fats and other hard to read ingredients. Kashi products also tend to contain less sodium and provide higher protein competitor offerings."

That about sums it up.

Food Advertising Wars

Here is an observation. Advertising wars. Or more precisely, advertising using products as adversaries. Case in point:

Campbell’s vs Progresso. Campbell’s has a television ad proclaiming that their Select Harvest Soups have no MSG. The blindfolded actor then recites the mouthwatering ingredients in the Select Harvest Soup (soon to have 33 varieties). When she tastes a spoonful of the Progresso soup, she announces she tastes MSG. A bit of an exaggeration, perhaps. Nevertheless, Progresso now is countering with ads on television for its new light soups (very tasty, by the way) saying that now there is no MSG in their selections.

Another side-by-side challenge comes when the maker of the cereal Total, throwing down the gauntlet to Kashi, declares that Total has 100% of everything a body needs, while Kashi's Go Lean Crunch doesn’t. Total has long taken this approach, stating that you would need say, 20 bowls of some other brand of cereal to equal one bowl of Total. There are a few ways of looking at this. One is, “Okay, give me the Total since I don’t plan on eating anything else for the rest of the day.” Or you can choose whichever cereal you like for other reasons and just eat it and get on with your day and the rest of your life.

Pizza My Heart

We are working on a piece comparing some of the healthier frozen pizzas--Amy’s, Kashi, etc with the not-so-healthy kinds—you know who they are.

Healthy eating on the Go

Suppose you want a snack that is more on the savory side—something with a bit of crunch, but not detrimental to any healthy eating plan you are trying to “become one with.” Something tasty to munch on that will tide you over until your next meal, or if you are more of a “grazer” something to be your next small meal. And if it had a few extra health benefits—even better.
Here are a few suggestions—Snacktrition, a part of Mellace Family Brands, based in California, is a line of about five inspired treats each packed neatly in a re-useable container. Just the names will make you long for a taste—Sea Salt Cashews with Fiber, Sea Salt Almonds with Calcium, Salt & Pepper Cashews with Fiber, Smoked Almonds with Calcium and Fruit & Nut Mix with Fiber and Calcium. What’s especially appealing is these treats are portable and can help you stick to your eating plan. It is also appealing that a portion of each sale promises to “Help Those Who Would Otherwise be Forgotten!” through the company’s Mama Cares Foundation.
Another savory snack comes in a bigger box but you can easily pack the contents into smaller snack-size bags or containers. La Jolla-based Kashi offers several varieties of TLC crackers—the cheddar cheese taste as good—or better- than Cheez-Its and are better for you. Not a big fan of cheese? Try their Fire-Roasted Vegetable, Homey Sesame, Natural Ranch, or Original 7-Grain. They also offer several varieties of “Party Crackers” that we haven’t yet tried, but they look promising.
Another way to thwart an attack of machine munchies is to pack a few snack-size bags of plain almonds or walnuts in your bag or briefcase. Coupled with a bottle of water or juice, or a piece of fresh fruit, and you just built yourself a little fortress against sidetracks to healthy eating.
