City Harvest is a food rescue organization dedicated to feeding New York City’s hungry men, women, and children. A number of restaurants in New York donate their excess food to City Harvest and if you are in the New York area and would like to patronize a restaurant that helps City Harvest, how can you quickly find such an establishment?

City Harvest recently announced the launch of their 2010 edition guide to New York City’s most generous restaurants, titled Great Food, Good Hearts. City Harvest’s Great Food, Good Hearts guide is a compilation of over 160 restaurants, bakeries, and cafes that not only support City Harvest by donating excess food – they also play a key role in raising funds and awareness for the organization.

And now, finding a restaurant that supports City Harvest is now more convenient than ever. For the first time City Harvest is releasing this year’s edition in digital format as well as print. Simply text your location and desired type of cuisine, and you’ll receive a return message with the closest two restaurants listed in Great Food, Good Hearts sent directly to your cell phone. To find the closest restaurant to your current location, text “city harvest” and the address of your current location to 69866. (If you must text, now you can do it for something worthwhile. Just please don't drive or walk while you're texting. ) To find the closest restaurant to your location by cuisine, text the type of cuisine and the address of your current location to 69866 (example: Italian 300 West 22^nd Street).

Food for Hope

While this is indirectly related to food, it is directly related to humanity. Culinary Tour de France is a restaurant group that offers the celebrated cuisines of France in Manhattan. The group donated $30,000 to City Harvest in conjunction with the One Mouth Can Make a Difference Campaign. Throughout last month in April, diners were able to add $1 to their check at Cafe d’Alsace, French Roast Downtown, French Roast Uptown, L’Express, Le Monde, Maison, Marseille, Nice Matin, and Pigalle for City Harvest, New York City’s only food rescue program. Tour de France also donated $1 from each prix fixe menu item ordered at the restaurants. The Tour de France Restaurant Group and their patrons should be recognized for helping City Harvest feed the growing number of New Yorkers now seeking emergency food. As it says on their website:

"...City Harvest is the world’s first food rescue organization, dedicated to feeding the city’s hungry men, women and children. This year, City Harvest will collect 23 million pounds of excess food from all segments of the food industry, including restaurants, grocers, corporate cafeterias, manufacturers and farms. This food is then delivered free of charge to more than 600 community food programs throughout New York City using a fleet of trucks and bikes as well as volunteers on foot. Each week, City Harvest helps over 260,000 hungry New Yorkers find their next meal."
